Her Early Life and Career

Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a breast cancer researcher from India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. Harris has both American and Indian citizenship.

Harris earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics from Howard University and a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her legal career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Her Rise to National Politics

In 2003, Harris was elected as the District Attorney of San Francisco. She served in this role until 2011, when she was elected as the Attorney General of California. In 2016, she was elected to the United States Senate, representing California.

As a Senator, Harris became known for her prosecutorial style and her progressive views. She was a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and played a leading role in the Mueller investigation.

Her Historic Vice Presidency

In 2020, Harris was chosen as the Democratic vice presidential candidate by Joe Biden. They won the election, and Harris became the first woman, first African American woman, and first South Asian American to serve as Vice President of the United States.

As Vice President, Harris has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, women's rights, and immigration reform. She has also played a key role in the Biden administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
