One Of The Militarys Simplest Procurement Projects Is Being Tied Down By Red Tape

Canada: Military procurement project slowed by red tape

Ottawa pushing to streamline acquisition process

Project to acquire new rifles delayed by bureaucratic hurdles

One of the military's simplest procurement projects is being tied down by red tape, as Ottawa struggles to streamline its acquisition process.

The project, to acquire new rifles for the Canadian Armed Forces, has been delayed by bureaucratic hurdles, including lengthy approvals and a lack of coordination between different government departments.

The delays have frustrated military leaders, who say the new rifles are dringendly needed to replace the current aging fleet of weapons.

The Department of National Defence (DND) has acknowledged the delays, but says it is working to streamline the acquisition process.

In a statement, DND spokesperson Daniel Le Bouthillier said the department is "committed to ensuring that the Canadian Armed Forces have the equipment they need to defend Canada and its interests."

He said DND is "working with industry partners to identify and address any challenges in the procurement process."

The delays in the rifle procurement project are just one example of the challenges that the military faces in acquiring new equipment.

In recent years, the military has been plagued by a series of high-profile procurement failures, including the cancellation of the F-35 fighter jet program and the delayed delivery of new warships.

The government has pledged to streamline the acquisition process, but it remains to be seen whether it can overcome the bureaucratic hurdles that have plagued military procurement for years.
