Syamsir Alam, Former Indonesian Military General, Dies at 79

Early Life and Military Career

Syamsir Alam was born on March 15, 1943, in West Java, Indonesia. He joined the Indonesian Army in 1964 and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1985, he had become a Major General and served as the commander of the Army's Strategic Reserve Command.

During his time in the military, Alam was involved in several key operations, including the invasion of East Timor in 1975 and the suppression of the Aceh separatist movement in the 1980s.

Post-Military Career

Alam retired from the military in 1999 and entered politics. He served as a member of the Indonesian Parliament from 2004 to 2009 and was a vocal critic of the government's handling of the economy and social issues.

In 2010, Alam was appointed as the head of the Indonesian Red Cross Society. He held this position until his death.
